A Room of One’s Own
I just finished reading Virginia Woolfe’s book, A Room of One’s Own. She’s the author responsible for this quote, “A woman must have a room of her own if she wants to write fiction”. I came across an old bookstore in my neighborhood with this book and purchased it for $5. I like her tone and personality throughout her writing, which really drew me in. There is a bit if sarcasm here and there and uses a lot of metaphors, so I can appreciate her thought process. She has said many inspiring things, one of which I agree with her, a woman should have a room of her own. In fact, I believe a woman should have her own place before she marries. A woman should be independent and learn to take care of herself. And when she has her own place, she can be more creative. Fortunately, today’s woman can afford those opportunities, unlike woman in the early 1920’s, who were getting married and raising families in their teens. As Virginia herself says, women were poor. If was unheard of for women to be educated and have careers. My own grandmother got married when she was 17 and grew a big family over the years.
